Due to the closing of Pascack Valley Hospital (PVH) residents and those working in the area or those passing through, are being subject to longer waits for emergency care at the other hospitals in the area.
While requests for EMS ambulances and ALS MICUs have not increased due to the closing of PVH, the length of time that those crews are spending transporting patients and waiting for a bed at the local emergency room have increased.
As a result, mutual aid crews must handle any calls that come in while they spend more time between point A and point B.
In some instances the primary MICU unit for the area may be tied up at the hospital and the secondary MICU unit must answer that call from further away cauing furhter delays in emergency care.
I have seen the 4 ambulance bays at Valley Hospital full and ambulances parked in the driveway waiting to unload. Sometimes the crew couldn't wait to get a parking space and wheeled the patient in from the driveway.
The plan put forth by P3 seems to be the best I have seen for re-establishing PVH as an acute care full service hospital.
We need a full service hospital, not just an emergecny room.
The other plans say an ER is good enough and if need be they will tranport the patients in their own ambulances to their main hospital.
All this takes time and money.
Those ambulances will not be your local volunteers, but a paid service.
When tranporting a critical care patient, hospital staff may have to ride along with the patient.
Insurance carriers, Medicare and Medicaid will have to pay these added charges.
If you don't qualify or you do not have insurance, you will be saddled with even more bills to pay.
If P3 can re-open PVH as a full service hospital and satisfy the bankruptcy
laws, then this plan must be given serious consideration.

This is my own opinion and should not be taken as an official statement of either of the organizations to which I belong.

JimC,
HUMC and Touro are motivated to have this location for sure and it's unclear what they intend to provide here beyond an emergency department and some short term observation beds.
Unfortunately, you can expect continued and increasing wait times in area hospitals until PVH is reopened as an acute care hospital. All local hospitals are overburdened by the flood of new patients since PVH's closure.

The blame will probably be directed at emergency departments but the real issues are systemic inefficiencies and process disconnects that have occurred over time - not unlike the ones that caused PVH's operational failure.

I believe the support you are seeing for HUMC is because HUMC is a recognized name. PVH is our first acquisition, and our Patient First philosophy and our plan to challenge the status quo may be too vague for many to grasp.

I thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts and I appreciate your well wishes. I promise to work very diligently with the physicians and care givers in your community to bring the highest quality most responsible combination of services to you and your community in the most expeditious manner.

Optimistic proposal - how do you really compete with a HUMC-Touro joint bid? The papers has yet to say what they are offering, other then a school, which worries me. The last thing we need is more teenagers hanging out at the local bars and driving around town.

I’m a senior and we need a hospital. I was visiting a friend in Hackensack last week and his wife explained that she had brought him into the ER and he waited almost 7 hours for a bed. He was awaiting admittance due to an erratic heart beat.

I wish the governing body would explain their apparent support of HUMC. I hope it’s because HUMC is going to reopen the hospital as an annex to their Hackensack site. If not I would hope they are checking you out for their support.

I called our last Mayor today and he was very supportive of you and HUMC stating that both of you were seeking to utilize the acute care beds. He noted that at this point only you are publicly saying your going to put in a full service hospital. Why is HUMC being so close mouth. Are they only planning an emergency room? Would that mean users would be awaiting a bed there before they can get an available bed in Hackensack? Will medicare pay that transfer cost or would I have to pay it?

I hope we get a hospital soon. I hope the message is clear that developers need not apply. Our last Mayor was a good businessman. He thinks the hospital was a good business that went unattended and that is why it failed. He thinks if you can justify the capital investment your firm can succeed. I wish you luck.

This community just wants our hospital back. And a hospital that actually cares about its patients more than the bottomline... well that would take some getting used to, wouldn't it?!
